Student Bodies (1981)

This is for those who are slowly creeping their way into the world of horror. I know that there are a lot of newbies out here and that is just bloody fantastic, but not everyone wants the hardcore gore of Saw or Hatchet. So I introduce you to Student Bodies, a horror comedy for fans and newbies alike.

Believe me when I say that this will make you LOL. It does make me wish that there was a really great horror comedy like it now. I don’t mean Scary Movie or Bride of Chucky (yes, it’s a comedy. Ever since the first one, they ALL are), but I mean a horror comedy that doesn’t take the laughs and just completely throw them in your face. You won’t find any gore in Student Bodies, no nude scenes although the whole premise of the murders revolve around sex. Quiet and prudish Toby just wants her friends to be careful and to look out for their best interests. Too bad all they want to do is get busy with each other. One by one, they are picked off by The Breather, a crazed psychopath who to talk through a rubber chicken. (Yea, you read that right.)

A lot of scenes in Student Bodies are odd or weird, but it is all highly amusing and entertaining. I have to admit that the best part of Student Bodies is the character Malvert, played by The Stick. At the beginning of the movie, a viewer might think that Malvert is the killer with the huge green gloves and his shouting, “Sex kills!” You really aren’t sure who The Breather is and the clues come up in the movie don’t help at all. Poor Toby is caught in the middle of all the chaos, even coming under suspicion herself.  The ending may leave you a little WTF, but remember, Student Bodies is almost pure satire, absolute silliness,  poking fun at itself and the horror genre. It’s not meant to be a serious film and some have compared it to being Scary Movie before Scary Movie. While Scary Movie may have its merits, Student Bodies is in a class all its own.

Scream rating: No screams, but giving it two BIG thumbs up for being horribly funny!

RIP Patrick Boone Varnell

  1. Holds up with friends. You laugh at each other’s reactions. As a result, it is a worldwide slumber party favorite. What gets groans alone, gets SCREAMS with pals, laughing together at how stupid it is. It is easier to take off the thinking cap with friends, than alone.
